The value of the Churchill tank will be debated for years. The Canadian/British raid on Dieppe in 1942 was a complete disaster. With this raid came the first use of the Churchill tank in World War II. Of the 26 Churchills committed to Dieppe all were lost. No studies of the beaches near and around Dieppe were undertaken. Therefore, when the 38 ton Churchill was off loaded onto pebble beaches these tanks were easily picked off or broke down. The greatest assets of the Churchill were; its frontal armor protection and its ability to climb terrain. The puny 2 pounder gun and its underpowered and problematic engine proved to be its weaknesses. Later versions would be up-gunned The raid on Dieppe was a debacle but, in the end proved a valuable lesson. The British high command turned to the eccentric but brilliant Maj. Gen. Percy Hobart. His British 79th Armored Division was about to be disbanded but, re-instated by Chief of the Imperial Staff Alan Brooke. Brooke envisioned the 79th Armored as a specialist support armored warfare unit, nicknamed "Hobart's Funnies." All the lessons learned by Dieppe went into creating counter measures to most of the German combat obstacles in Normandy The Churchill AVRE (Armored Vehicle Royal Engineers) was produced in many versions. These versions included: clearing mines at a high rate of speed, attacking bunkers and concrete roadblocks with 290mm spigot shells, placing ramps for tanks to overcome walls, and Flamethrower tanks to destroy bunkers and terrorize defenders. The AVRE tanks proved a valuable asset at Gold, Juno and Sword beaches. The American's declined the British offer of assistance with the AVRE. DD Tank (Dual Drive) was designed by Hungarian born inventor Nicholas Straussler. The DD, sometimes nicknamed the "Donald Duck tank," was an armored vehicle; sealed off from water, with a large air assisted canvas screen, that displaced weight of the tank in water. The steering mechanism was operated at the rear of the tank. After much study the Sherman tank was found to be the most suitable. On 4 out of the 5 beaches the DD proved successful. The DD's were off loaded at a range from 700 to 1,000 yards on Juno, Gold and Sword. Most landed inland and supported the attack. At Utah Beach only 1 DD tank was lost. This proved that American tankers were very capable of handling this vehicle. The DD tank landing on Omaha Beach proved to be an incredible disaster. Of the initial 29 DD tanks launched 27 sank. The rough seas and the ridiculous decision of off loading the DD's 3 miles off shore proved fatal. Despite this disaster, follow up Sherman tanks aggressively attacked German strong points and assisted the infantry driving inland. Some historians maintain that the Sherman tank was the make or break vehicle on Omaha Beach. However, the common perception was destroyer support saving Omaha. Enjoy this excellent episode of "Tanks! Normandy."seru kan.. kapan kira-kira kita bisa perang heheh.. bukan itu maksudnya kapan kita bisa ikutan perang eh... |
